Exploring Christianity and Violence

I recently had the privilege of interviewing Evangelist  Jeremy Hodges from Google plus.  We explored the New Testament position on violence.  There was a particular emphasis on Self Defense.

***Warning ***  This topic is extremely unpopular and may challenge your current beliefs.

What does the New Testament say about violence?
What does the New Testament say about self Defense?

I encourage you to take a listen as we explore some recent threads I posted relevant to these topics.  You can find most of the links here!  http://goo.gl/oSt83

Below you will find a lot of the scripture references that we discussed - and then some.

Strap on your seat belts as you put on your headphones and ask yourself  - "What does the New Testament say?"

(Download audio here: http://goo.gl/Wr07X )

As you listen ask yourself  - "Are there any post cross scriptures that encourage self defense by using physical violence?"

Love, Pray, and do good to our enemies  -Matthew 5:44
Soldiers can do violence to NO man -  Luke 3:14
Recompense NO man evil for evil -   Romans 12:17; 1 Peter 3:9
Don’t avenge yourselves -      Romans 12:19
Overcome evil with Good -        Romans 12:21
See that NONE render evil for evil -    1 Thessalonians 5:15
When Christians are persecuted flee  - Matthew 10:23
Some refused to be saved! -   Hebrews 11:35

  1. Yeah this was a very sad conversation. You post scriptures and they were totally ignored. Kind of a joke really. lol I realized it was more about certain doctrines taught by men more than actually dealing with the right question.

  3. What an interesting conversation! I agree that we should not wound anyone with weapons in self-defense. But if one can, I agree with using our hands and feet to defend ourselves.

  4. taken out of context. don't put emphasis where it doesn't belong.

Do violence to "no man" in Luke is a good general guideline... but it doesn't mean in every situation. Context is important.

Don't be afraid to shoot someone who's about to shoot you. That is self-defense.

    -Guess Who.
